Big Bass Tournament

Sunday February 25, 2007

First place to Mike Edgett with a 5.92 lb. largemouth bass. It was pre spawn 59 degree water temp. First and Second place were caught using Carolina Rigged pumpkin and watermelon brush hogs in 12-24 ft of water.

Bardwell:

Cedar Creek:  Water temperature 12/30/2005 was 51 degrees. Windy and cold.

Fairfield:  February 10, 2006  Lake Fairfield is allot of fun right now. The Bigger females are being caught right now.
Water temps are 84 at the discharge and the main Lake temps are about 63 degrees. Bass were caught up to almost 8 lbs. this week with many good keepers coming to the boat. Bass were hitting Texas rigged creature baits in watermelons and shallow running crankbaits in shad patterns. Bass were in about 2-4 feet of water and are getting ready to spawn. Carolina rigs with same creature baits were catching Bass and Redfish. Off points and break lines around points and creek channels in about 8-16 feet of water. Redfish have been caught up to 15 lbs. and brought to my boat. They are great action even if you get into a school of 17 - 19 inches. Redfish must be 20 inches to be a keeper and they make some of the best table fare you have ever eaten. Take the Redfish and fillet it down the backbone on one side only. Leave the scales on one side. Fire up the pit and lay the fillets scales down and add seasons to the meat and let cook. Just eat right out of the shell. Wow Thank You Jesus.

Water Temperature: 50 to 58
Water Clarity: 1 foot
Water Depth: 5 to 10 ft

Good fishing and May God Bless you. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service.

Trips are being booked right now. If you want to book just call 903-478-2633 0r 903-724-0961.

Fishing Report  Black Bass:

The lake level is almost 6 feet below normal. You NEED to pay attention where you run on the lake. Where we have been catching fish is down at the pipeline area off the main lake on the north side as you head toward the dam. Watch for a No Anchor/No Dredging sign on the rip-rap. About 100-150 yards out from this sign work a Carolina-rig across the pipeline.

Also the old 287 roadbed has been producing fish working a Drop shot rig & C-rig. Need to work the drop shot as closest to the old roadbed. But you need to keep your boat in the 12-to14 ft of water. The key is work the bait close to drop offs and ledges. When you work the bait just let it sit there and count to15 then move it. These fish will hit it like a crappie the larger fish will just swim off the bait. These fish are moving back forth from shallow to deep water. When I say shallow I’m talking about 4 ft of water. When work use a start and stop retrieve this will help put a few more fish in the boat but the drop shot has been the most productive for my customers and me.

The c-rig has been good as well working the old 287-road bed on the 309 flat. But keep in mind the drop shot is going to keep your bait suspended. I have using a 12" to 14" liter from my hook to the Tru-Tungsten drop shop weight. On the C-rig I have been using a 3/8 tru-tungsten weight on 30 Mean Green Braid with a black swivel and 2 glass beads (http://www.tru-tungsten.com/), just past the swivel I will have a 18 liter on 17 McCoy’s Mono with a 2/0 wide gap Gamma hook.

In closing the earlier morning bite over the shallow roadbed and drop off, keep a Black/ Black buzz or Pop-R type bait (baby bass). The problem you will catch a few white bass.

A few creeks that are hold fish and getting ready to move up are:

  • 309 Flats ( 287 road bed)

All these areas can be found on a Lake Products Map.

You also want to try another new scent product call Lunker Sauce (www.lunkersauce.com). It has an applicator just like shoe polish applicator, there is not a mess working with it and this stuff stays with your bait BIG TIME.

All the areas I mention in my reports are off the Lake Products maps. If you would like help in finding any of these stops drop me a line or call me and I would be happy to e-mail you the GPS coordinates.

If you’re on the water and you get hungry, try the restaurant at Oak Cove Marina off the Hwy 287 Bridge to the south. They have some of the best hamburgers and steak fingers on the water, and they’ve just added some terrific homemade desserts. They also have motel rooms, R.V. hook-ups, fishing pier, camping and gas on the water. To contact Oak Cove about tournaments, guide service or rooms, call 903-872-0888. http://www.oakcovemarina.com/

Be careful on the water, as you know there are no true boat lanes on the lake. If you have any questions please give me a call or drop me an e-mail. We also have a video out on the lake, which is a great tool to see the lake before you burn a tank of gas to find the fish. Check out my website www.schmidtsbigbass.com to get more info on the video

And always please wear a life jacket when running the big motor and kill switch.

I’d like to take the time to thank the fine folks at Oak Cove Marina 903-872-0888 and my Sponsors: American Rod Smith, S.O.B. Lures, Lunker Sauce, Assalt Baits, McCoy Fishing Line, Kicker Fish Bait Co, West Boats & Xpress Boats, and Tru-Tungsten.

Please Practice Catch and Release

Sam Rayburn:  February 10, 20006     I have been fishing Big Sam for about 12 years and fishing tournaments on her for 3 years. I know the Lake quite well and will begin today to give my reports on this Lake. A client and me went out yesterday on Big Sam as the small front went through. Water temps were around 52-54 at daylight with a warm sun rising and warming things up. The same pattern is pre-spawn and winter mode for the Bass right now. Slow down and sit on the fish where you find them. Bass are staging for spawn and some big females are even in 2-6 feet back in coves hitting rattletraps and crank baits. We had over 14 keepers with one Big Mama going 10 lbs. She hit a red rattletrap in 6 feet of water. Crankbaits and traps fished over hydrilla and around areas of the Lake without Hydrilla, around stumps and wood are hitting. The norm is 3 - 5 bites a day but they are solid fish. Deeper fish are in their winter patterns hitting creature baits in watermelons and also red shad power worms are getting bit. Fish Texas rigged and Carolina rigged. Structure in 12 - 22 feet along points and creek channels will get you some big fish when you find the sweet spots.

Good fishing and May God Bless you. Don Mattern Sr. with Mattern Guide Service. Trips are being booked right now. If you want to book just call 903-478-2633 0r 903-724-0961.

Tawakoni:  Water lightly stained; 81-85 degrees; 0.57’ low. Black bass are fair on crankbaits and Carolina-rigged blue fleck soft plastics. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs over brushpiles. White bass are fair on minnows at night under lights. Striped bass and hybrid striper are fair on live shad, and by trolling crankbaits over humps. Catfish are fair on prepared bait.

I was really whupped today after fishing two long days back to back, especially with that wind and driving rain yesterday. I wasn't sure I was going to fish at all, but after falling out about 7:30 last night, I was up and wide awake at about 3:30am. I killed as much time as I could, but by 7:30 I was bored to death, and decided to head to the lake for some R&R fishing. It was to be a purely recreational day.

I was fishing a hole that's about 16 ft. deep, just slow-rolling my yellow Bucktail jig, when I got a pretty good hit. The fish was obviously strong, and kept stripping line. I just back the drag off a little because I had my 7' medium action graphite, and my 4600 Ambassador spooled with 12-pound line. I knew I was going to have to be real patient... so I was. It took about 20 minutes to get her to quit and pull her in. I was inside one of the harbors, and drew a small audience on one of the docks while I was fighting her.

I had talked to Chris Dennis a little earlier, and he was coming to get in the boat with me. I told him to call when he got close to the dock so I could pick him up. So he did. Right in the middle of the battle. I answered the phone and told him he was going to have to wait a little.

One of the guys on the dock said, "I can't believe that you'd answer the phone while fighting a fish like that!" Well... it rang, didn't it?

I finally got her to quit and roll over on her side so I could get her in the boat.

Someone asked me one time how big a fish would have to be before I mounted it. I've never come up with a solid answer. I'm not really into mounts. I didn't mount this one. I released her after shooting a few pictures. My scale only weighs to 15 pounds, so I didn't get a weight. Trust me, she was well over 15 pounds.

...Only a little more...
